This is great news for those embarking on a career as an airline pilot as they will be able to part fund their studies through the UK government student loan support. This will significantly lessen the financial burden of becoming an airline pilot. You may also be eligible for further maintenance loans/grants to support your studies which are also repayable once you get a job with earnings over the current threshold limit.
Please check out your own eligibility for student loan support at www.saas.co.uk or www.slc.co.uk
The programme fully integrates flying training and will enable you to gain a commercial pilots licence (ATPL) and a Middlesex University Honours degree at the same time. The final part of the degree will be completed whilst working with either:
- an airline or equivalent as a First Officer
or
- Tayside Aviation as a Flying Instructor
It has been designed specifically to incorporate all of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulated pilot training leading to the award of an Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) and to recognise the learning achieved during the first stages of operational practice as an airline pilot with the option to also train as a Flight Instructor.
The training aspects of this programme are hands-on and practical in nature, and carried out with face to face support from Instructors at Tayside Aviation’s facilities at Dundee Airport. This applies to both ground based and practical flight training with support available for theoretical knowledge exam preparation. All theoretical knowledge exams are taken at an examination centre approved by the CAA. Practical skill tests are also undertaken at Dundee Airport with an approved CAA examiner.
Throughout your programme you will also have access to all online resources at Middlesex University. In addition, the later stages of the programme are delivered by Middlesex University in partnership with an operator (or, for those pursuing the Flight Instructor pathway- in partnership with Tayside Aviation), You will be supported throughout your programme by Module Tutors, these may be either based at Tayside Aviation or Middlesex University but will work as a team to support your learning.
