Air League/Air Cadet Pilot Scheme

Tayside Aviation is a major training provider for the Ministry of Defence as part of the air cadets (ACPS) and has a good reputation for excellent training and pass rates.

Air cadets from all over Britain have the opportunity to apply for an ACPS which is aimed at allowing young people to attain a good foundation in flying. This course is provided by the CFS and is applied for via the cadet's squadron or CCF section.      Air cadets can apply for the scholarship from the age of 16.

If the air cadet is successful, he/she will be awarded 12 hours of flying, which is aimed at getting the cadet solo and, therefore, on the first rung of the ladder towards attaining their PPL.

For further details regarding the cadet scholarships, please contact our staff who will be willing to assist - [email protected]

There are other sources of flying scholarships:-

  • Air League
  • Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators
  • Geoffrey De-Havilland Flying Foundation
  • Royal Aeronautical Society

Once granted
When you have been granted a flying scholarship, you will be sent an initial letter together with a grid of dates from which the cadet can choose his preference. Once this is returned to Tayside Aviation, the Company will allocate slots according to choices. The cadet will receive 'Joining Instructions' which have to be acknowledged.   When you arrive at Dundee, our friendly staff will be happy to assist you.

Arrival in Dundee
Depending on when you arrive in Dundee, Scotland, you will either be taken to your accommodation (Airlie House Hotel) or you will make your own way there, which will be your hotel for the length of your flying scholarship.

Every morning you will be collected from the hotel and taken to Tayside Aviation's base at Dundee Airport. You will then be taken in hand by our friendly staff, including the instructors who will be your main tutor for your flying scholarship.

Help will be at hand
Our cadet liaison officer will be your contact person when on site. The liaison officer will be able to answer most of your questions and assist you. You will be allocated to a primary instructor and he will give you the training and guidance you will require.

Solo Flight
You will be taught all you need to know to allow you to go on your first solo flight. You will, however, be required to pass an examination before 'going' solo.
