MOD FLYING SCHOLARSHIP CONTRACT RENEWED

Tayside Aviation has been the United Kingdom prime contractor for the RAF/RN Flying Scholarship Scheme since 1994 and has been responsible for the training of 4000 prospective RAF/RN pilots and ground branch officers and this contract involved 80,000 hours of flying training.

Of the 500 scholarships awarded each year aroung 250 recipients were trained at the three Tayside Aviation locations and the balance were sub contracted to a number of flying clubs and schools throughout the country.

There is a two year extension included in the last (five years) contract and the company has now been contracted to provide flying training for up to 35 Air Cadet Flying Scholarships for this year. Tayside Aviation has been training RAF flying scholars continuously since 1978 and is delighted to be tasked to provide this prestigious training for another year albeit with a considerable reduction in numbers.

All the FSS training will take place at Dundee and RAF Central Flying School examiners recently re-approved the instructors, aircraft and facilities.

The reduction in numbers will now enable Tayside Aviation to sell a few of the Cessna 152 fleet with currently consists of 14 aircraft including 4 Aerobats. Details of the aircraft available for sale are as follows:

Fly an Arrow

 

PPL's can fly the variable pitch/retractable undercarriage Piper Arrow. Rate £138 per hour including VAT and landing fees at Dundee, Perth & Fife (Glenrothes) Airports.

The Arrow is also available for self-fly hire subject to insurance requirements being fulfilled.

Cheap Flying

Tayside Aviation can offer cheaper flying at Perth in the Skyfox Gazelle which is an Australian built two seater powered by the Rotax 912 engine as is fitted to the Katanas operated by the company.

The Gazelle is delightful to fly and the PPL rental rate is £59/hour and £69/hour for dual flying both rates are inclusive of VAT and landing fees at Perth.

Another cheapy is the Tipsy Nipper which is operated as a group aircraft from Dundee, and a share in the group is £666 which can be returned if the group member decides to withdraw. The single seat Nipper is powered by by the Barry Smith VW conversion which is cleared for inverted flying and is charged out at £40 per hour inclusive of VAT and landing fees at Dundee, Perth and Fife (Glenrothes) Airports. The Nipper was the first aircraft owned and operated by Tayside Aviation when the company was original formed as Aerosport Limited in February 1968 and was repurchased last year.

The Grumman AA5 which is based at Dundee is also good value-although it has four seats it is charged at the same rate as the two seater's- £109.80/hour for training and £97.80/hour for rental. It is weight restricted and is therefore not a full four seater but will take three adults or two adults and two children comfortably.
